The Nera Gorges

Twenty-two kilometres of gorge, caves, overhanging paths and cable crossings. The wildest in the country.

The Nera Gorges are reckoned the wildest natural gorges in Romania. Walked end to end, from Șopotul Nou down to Sasca, they run twenty-two kilometres and take two or three days with camping along the way. The route passes caves, shafts, overhanging sections and cable crossings.

The drop between the two ends is small, under forty metres, which also makes the river suitable for rafting. Descents are usually run in spring and early summer, while the water level allows it.

For anyone not attempting the whole route, the entrance from Sasca Română is ten minutes by car from the guesthouse, and the first stretch as far as the tunnels can be done on its own.
