The Devil's Lake

Romania's largest karst lake, formed when a cave roof collapsed. Twenty-two metres deep.

The lake formed when the roof of a cave collapsed, which accounts for both its shape and its unusual depth — around twenty-two metres. The walls rise straight out of the water.

The classic route is a circuit of roughly ten hours: out of Sasca Montană towards Știnăpari and Poiana La Logor, down the Ogașul Porcului to the lake, then on to Cantonul Damian, Podul Bei and Sasca Română along the Nera. It is hard going for anyone not used to walking.

The short version: drive as far as past Cărbunari, then walk in through the Ogașul Porcului. Two to two and a half hours through forest.
